How To Prepare for Describe Image For PTE

Describe Image is a challenging task of the PTE exam, wherein you are required to describe the important information in a graph, table, map, or diagram within 40 seconds. You will be given 25 seconds to first study the image and prepare your response, after which you will have 40 seconds to record your audio response through the microphone. Extracting such meaningful data in such a short span of time can prove to be a challenging task. Thus, you need to be very sharp, quick, and well-prepared with a proper strategy.

  • The various kinds of images you can get in the Describe Image task could include maps, tables, bar graph, line graph, pie chart, flowcharts, Venn diagrams, and organization charts. So, you need to be well-prepared for understanding all such diagrams.
  • First and foremost, you need to focus on the main information in the image. When you look at the image, you need to ask yourself what the main idea behind the image could be, and what the details are relating to the main ideas. Note down the key ideas and phrases that relate to this important information and the details, which you can later use to put into sentences.
  • Now, you need to organize what you have to say. A well-organized answer is one that can cover all the main information and details that you have made note of in the previous step. You also need to talk about implications or conclusions based on the information.
  • In the entire process, remember that you need to avoid all kinds of pauses and words that can prove you to be unconfident. You need to be ready with a set of pre-defined sentence structures and templates, flexible enough to be used in a variety of circumstances.

Along with the preparation, you also need to understand how the Describe Image format is scored. Understanding what all is analyzed will give you an idea of the aspects of the English language that you need to focus on. The scoring on Describe Image is based on three factors – content, pronunciation, and oral frequency.

Content

The most important thing that is checked is whether your response accurately and thoroughly describes the image. All the aspects and elements of the image should be addressed in the response. All parts of the image should be dealt with. All logical and specific information must be included.

Pronunciation

It will be analyzed if your response demonstrates the ability to produce speech sounds similar to most regular speakers of the English language. Your speech should be easily understandable, with the vowels and consonants being pronounced in a native manner. The stress words and phrases must also be pronounced correctly.

Oral frequency

Your speech should be smooth, effortless, and natural. Your rhythm, phrasing, and stress will be analyzed. A constant and natural rate of speech with appropriate phrasing will score better. Any kinds of hesitations or repetitions will be negatively marked.

With all of this understood, you should now be in a better position to understand what all is examined in the Describe Image task, which will help you prepare better for your future tests.
