Tip 1 – Understand who you are writing to

Who you are writing to has the potential to change the layout and content of the letter you are to write. If you are writing to a doctor, the format will be different; if you are writing to a nurse, the format will be different; and if you are writing to a patient’s relative, the format will be completely different. Also, the category of the doctor and nurse will also change the format of the letter. Whether the doctor or nurse is related to the field of general medicine, neurology, paediatrics, urology, gynaecology, or any other field, also decides upon how the content of the letter will be.

Tip 2 – Understand the details that you have to mention

After you understand who you are writing to, you need to understand who you are writing for. Here, we mean the patient. You need to understand the details of the patient and the medical issues that the patient is facing. Then, you need to understand, out of the details, what all you need to mention in the letter. Once you have all the details that need to be mentioned, you can arrange your format in the required way.

Tip 3 – Remember that the case notes given to you may have distractions

In the task that is given to you, you will be given certain points and paragraphs. But, not all of what is given to you is important. The case notes given to you have both the required information as well as certain not-so-important points. You need to be able to differentiate between both the types of information. Leave behind the unimportant points and focus only on what is important. Eliminate those that are unnecessary, and write your letter including only the vital points. This is important because the examiner will be able to test your skill about whether you can understand from the task given to you, whether you have the sense of understanding.

Tip 4 – Organize your draft

Now you know all the information that you have to include, so take up these points and arrange them in terms of priority. What you have to include in the introduction of the letter, and what you may include later in the letter, should be your basic understanding. A clear structure with the right amount of focus on the right points is imperative. The previous step will help your examiner analyze your basic understand, while this step will help them understand the level of your sense.

Tip 5 – Does your letter include a request?

If your letter states a request, then you need to make sure that the request is mentioned in greater detail in both the initial and final paragraphs of the passage. Doing so, which means repeating the request in the final paragraph of the letter, will focus on what you want the reader to do. If you compel the reader to take up the action, then you have succeeded.
